The Norman

Tag Rugby 2016/17

Following the cancellation of the first date, the tournament finally took place on a calm and sunny but chilly day in November; the conditions made for a very successful competition.

A round robin format gave all teams at least four games with plenty of match experience. Once the action got underway it was clear to see that the teams were evenly matched which made for some nail biting finishes.

The Norman team  were in a pool pitted against teams from Weeting, Gooderstone and Methwold B. The action kicked off against Gooderstone; a close game resulting in a Norman win - 4 tries to 3 - with two tries each for Toby and Tom. After a rest, fellow Trinity Partnership School Weeting were Norman's next opponents; 3 tries from Toby and two more for Tom gave the Normans their second win 5 tries to 4.  The final game saw another Trinity Partnership game, this time Normans versus Methwold B. A fantastic team performance saw 3 tries for Tom, 2 for Aimee and 1 for Cameron with Methwold only managing to breach the Norman defence once. Three wins out of three meant the Norman team topped their pool and would face Feltwell in the semi-final.

The semi-final was a close encounter against a strong Feltwell team; as the final whistle blew it was 5 tries each which saw the game going into 3 minutes of extra time. A tense 3 minutes saw Aimee scoring before Feltwell equalised, Tom then went over to see the Normans taking the lead. An incredible show of defiance saw the Normans defend their line until the final whistle to gain a place in the final, winning 7-6 AET.

The final, against Methwold A, was another close encounter. Unfortunately Methwold managed to score one more try than the Norman team with the final score 5 tries to 4 in Methwold's favour.

Overall it was a fantastic team performance with everyone playing their part, an enjoyable tournament with the next round of competition to look forward to in the New Year.

January saw the level 2 event take place at Saham, home of Watton rugby Club. A cold, bright but sunny day saw lots of good quality rugby. Game one saw the Normans up against Caston; the team scored five tries (Tom 3 and Toby 2) and conceded 3, a great start. Hingham were the next opponents and a very close game saw the teams score 5 tries each - 2 tries each for Cameron and Tom and 1 for Toby. Match 3 was a thriller against a well organised Great Hockham team; the team were amazing! 2 tries each for Tom and Toby but Hockham managed to score 1 more meaning defeat for the Normans. The final game saw the team up against Trinity Partnership friends Methwold Primary School. Another great game for the neutral supporter but the Normans wanted revenge after losing out in the final in November. This game saw Aimee score a great last minute try to give victory to the team; 3 tries from Toby and 1 from Tom meant a win 5 tries to 4.

Two wins, a draw and one defeat saw the Normans finish runners up to Great Hockham who won all of their games; both teams qualified for the next round in Norwich.

Norwich Rugby Club was the venue for the level 3 event held on the first day of February; a cold, very wet and muddy day!

With only three teams in Pool C, the Normans didn't see as much Rugby as they may have liked. Up first was Bawburgh; with the opposition winning the toss, the Normans were behind within the first minute but came back to score each time Bawburgh did. There wasn't enough time left to score an equaliser with the score at 7 tries to 6 (Tom 3 and Toby 4) in favour of Bawburgh so defeat in the first game. Up next was the team from Downham Prep; a very well organised team display saw them score 6 tries with the Normans scoring 3 in reply (Tom 2 and Toby 1). A second defeat in the Pool games meant a place in the Plate competition for the Norman Team.

With 5 teams in the Plate competition, the games were played in a round robin format. The Norman team played well against the first team from Langham; Tom scored 1 try and Toby three in a game that finished with four tries a piece. The weather was awful but the children were thoroughly enjoying themselves, unfortunately the rain made recording the scoring difficult as my paper started to disintegrate! The next game saw a Norman victory 8 tries to 5, with 6 tries for Toby and 2 for Tom, the opposition was Fairhaven. The next team are well known to the Normans - Methwold! Once again a close but enjoyable encounter against the fellow Trinity team who have become our friends along the way; today it was Methwold's turn to finish on top 6 tries to 4 - 2 tries each for Tom and Toby. The final game of the competition saw Kenninghall beat the Normans but the score wasn't recorded as the paper was far too soggy! There were tries once again for Tom and Toby with Tilly also getting on the score sheet. A great team effort on a day made to play rugby. A well deserved third place finish for the team who are the first tag rugby team to make it to a level 3 competition.

Before the rain set in.                        After the rugby; cold, wet and ready for home.

Team - Toby, Tom, Aimee, Tilly, Lexi, Cameron (not pictured), River, Kacie and Georgia
