The Norman Curriculum

We are proud of the creative nature of our curriculum. We seek to encourage children to discover their creativity, independence and joy of learning. Our aim is to enable children to leave each year group ready for the next year's challenge, to be engaged in their learning and to actively seek to understand and overcome new challenges. To do this we believe that children need to develop a 'Growth Mindset' where they seek to be open minded and explore the range of possibilities open to them.

The Norman Curriculum has been developed from the weaving together of the National Curriculum, Global Learning Agenda, Outdoor Education Curriculum and our professional understanding of teaching and learning. For the children to learn effectively we not only encourage creativity and independence but expect a rigour in our teaching and learning.

We view our children as beginning an educational journey which will unfold as they progress through the school. There are a variety of strands running through the curriculum which interweave at times and stand alone at others. We use the language of travel and adventure to describe our cross curricular 'topics' or 'Adventures'. These 'Adventures' enable children to make connections across subject areas and begin to see that learning can be adapted and applied in other situations and circumstances. Our children are developing their learning kit bag to help them in their educational adventure called 'Life'. A central concern within the curriculum is the emotional health of the individual children in the school, our planning and execution keeps this as central.

We teach Phonics across reception, Years 1,2 and 3 using Read Write Inc.

You can access the curriculum maps for each class and subject by clicking on the tabs at the side. From these you will have an insight into what children will cover as they progress on their learning voyage.
